I am on set number three of the new 3D gears and each set has the same issue with the flat gear...
In case you missed it, that is twelve thousands run out!!! I assume this is due to the new molded gear and how it changes dimensionally during the cooling process. I did find a work around that I want to share because if I purchased three sets from three different shops and they are all the same, there is a good chance your gear is the same as well. Here is what you can do... 1) Rotate the flat gear to a different position on the brass insert (I know, the set screw hole doesn't line up) 2) Find the alignment that provides the least amount of run out (mine was exactly 180 degrees from the standard alignment position 3) Drill a hole VERY CAREFULLY centered on the side that needs access to the set screw (NOTE:Use a hand drill, not a power tool and go slow) 4) Check to see that any debris is removed from the edge of the newly drilled hole (r/c car body reamer works great here) 5) Install and check overall assembly I did this and will give it a try when the weather clears up. It isn't perfect, but hopefully won't result in another ball of parts. (don't ask, it was neither pretty nor cheap) This post is not meant to bash on the Rave, it is an awesome little heli... but this is something that you may want to check before your next flight. It might just save your favorite heli. Hope this helps!

Thanks for posting about it. Some people have talked about the black ones being out but I did not know they were that far out. Also note it is fine to run the white gear here as well. The black gears are most important with the bevel gears. The white flat gear works fine.

Just out of curiosity, did you check the runout on the brass piece to make sure it was not off as well? That could contribute to this issue. However if the flat black gear is the issue, the white gears do work just fine in that location.

Yes sir. I purchased three brass inserts. I had basically the same readings on the runout of the gears using different brass inserts.
The white flat gears definitely had less runout, but I stripped one of those to start off with. That is why I really wanted to run the black gears.

Now I have tested two different black ones, two white ones and two inserts. All were offset more or less.
Last time I was fighting this issue I did measure and thought about moving the gear 180 degrees on the brass insert but never did it. But after reading this thread I took a white gear and drilled a new hole 180 degrees from the stock hole. This really worked! Now the gear is wobbling ~90% less than it did before! |
