Can you tell me why the runway at ARCA leaves dirty black skid marks on my canopy when the Protos slides down the runway on its side?

Sorry Chris we forgot to tell you that you should land using the landing skids and not your heli canopy.

Cool Rick, thanks for the offer.

Are you connected to MSHeli, or just a helpful experienced guy?

Here's a recent topic you might chime in on:

"How can you describe to somebody not in person how to get the belt tension correct?"

thanks
Jim

Doh! I knew I was doing something wrong.

Hey Jim, welcome to the new "cool place" to hang out.

Of course not, you were just experimenting with new landing techniques

I just own and fly these.

For me, I tighten the belt until the it does not 'burp' when doing standing rolls. If the belt is tight enough to behave while executing that, you are good. Make the tail end of the belt about the same.

It burps?

I believe the sound he's describing is the belt slipping. I've heard this my self several times when I first started flying the Protos.

Just as a rule of thumb now when I tension the belt I will start on the motor side and adjust, then go to the tail side and adjust.

When adjusted properly you will find the belt fairly tight and probably more then you would expect.

Gosh, I hope I don't hear my belt slipping... I guess I heard that when I did some early tests with +/- 15 on the collective.

By standing roll, do you mean in-place aileron roll? That wouldn't seem to be putting too much stress on it.

Anyway, thanks for the comments.
Jim

The burp I talked about is the the sound of the belt slipping past the pinion (motor pulley).

I find that standing rolls or stationary aileron rolls or aileron flips require more power than the same but using elevator, and are a better indicator of belt tension.

Interesting; I'd never thought that... I have a lighter touch on the aileron rolls than I do on the elevator I guess.

In any case, when I had too much pitch, I heard the funny noises on pitch pumps, which provide the opportunity for unlimited power consumption...

Does anyone notice the belt seems to rub more and make more noise when yawing in one direction that the other? This seemed to be happening today when giving left rudder, but not right.

Thanks,
Daniel
