Thursday, July 22nd
After a long flight, and a slight rental car delay, we made it to Venlo this morning around 11am. What followed next was a mad dash to get everything unpacked and setup and ready to go. I decided to bring my desktop editing machine with me so that I could have videos up daily, and after constructing a "transport case" for the machine out of an old suitcase and foam padding, I was curious whether things would make it in one piece. Luckily the desktop and 22inch monitor made it fine, though my power supply did fry on me, but luckily there was a shop in downtown Venlo that had a replacement! We made it out to the field around 3pm, and found quite a few pilots doing test flights, and the organizers running around getting all the final preparations completed. I snapped a few photos of the site, which you'll find below. tomorrow is the first official day of the contest, with a pilots meeting at 8am, followed by official practice and the contest starting at 12pm. Be sure to check back for more photos, videos and pilots scores! Dont forget about the blogs too!! Thursday Photos:

This morning I got up fairly early, thinking the pilots meeting was going to be held at 8:00 am.....yeah I was wrong on that. The real time was actually 11:30 which worked out perfect because in transit TSA inspected my bag with the video tripod in it and conveniently left out one of the main pieces to it. Without that piece I was going to be shooting by hand all weekend. Not good! Luckily I found a hardware store that had the right parts to make something that worked! Thank you MacGyver re-runs for helping teach me the find art of "customization". Today was the official start of the contest, with the morning being open for "official practice". The Expert class started their set manouvers round around 12. This is my fourth year at the 3D Masters, and I have to say the overall skill level of the expert class has greatly increased since that first year I attended. These set maneuvers aren't meant to be easy, and quite a few pilots made them look simple. Afterwards it was the Masters turn at their first round of set maneuvers. A short spat of rain rolled through about 5 pilots into the round, though luckily it moved on quite quickly and flying resumed. There were some very good flights being put in by the guys in this class, and it definitely left me looking forward to seeing the flight to music rounds tomorrow! Videos are processing now, and I hope to have them slowly uploaded over the next few hours! Enjoy the photos for now... Friday Videos: Scores Update: Posted!! Congrats to the winners in both classes!
Ill bet they spent hours, days and weeks training for this. Specially N.M. that got problems at XFC in finals rounds and didnt got the final place he was able to get in case of the circumstances. - Arild |

I know the 3D Masters positions are based on points, but it's interesting to look at the event placings. Each of the top 3 came in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the events.
Between the next two, Luigi beat Dominick 2 out of 3. The horse race aspects shouldn't take away from the amazing flying by all of the top entrants, but it does help appreciate how tight the competition was. Thanks for the great coverage and vids. Jim
