Nick,
What mixes do you have on your 3d planes? I just finished completing my 2nd revision on my flat foamy. It flies great, but I was considering using a throttle to aileron mix while hovering. Any thoughts on that? Any other mixes you use on your foamies? Thanks... Bobby

Bobby,
While I'm not too keen on airplane set-ups, these are mixes that I've been trying to keep the airplane flying strait, but could be way wrong from what guys like Seth and Ryan use to trim their models. 1)AIL to Throttle- foamies aileron's seem to really slow the airplane down, and the only way I could possibly think to keep that from happening was to mix the aileron inputs to the throttle so as you add aileron, it adds throttle to compensate for the added drag of the aileron. This issue with this mix is that compensation isn't consitant from manuever to manuever. 2) Throttle to RUD- for pulling out of a hover and uplines to correct for any weird thrusting and de-trimming on the rudder. 3) Throttle to ELE- """ for the elevator. 4) RUD to ELE- If during rudder assisted knife edge flight, if it pulls one direction to the skids or canopy. 5) ELE to RUD- This is for pulling into loops, 45's, etc. and the wings are staying level, but needs a rudder input to keeping going strait. Maybe play with some of those and see if any help... Nick |

Thanks Nick. I will give some of those a try. The first thing that I've noticed is that when giving throttle in a hover, it torque rolls the plane quite a bit. I don't think I can add aileron correction to the throttle to completely solve this, or it would cause the plane to roll while in forward flight. So I am thinking of trying to set up a switch for hover/harriers. I'll let you know what I find out. Too windy today to fly the 7 oz foamy.

Hey Bobby,
When I was down in Bryan last month, I watched Nick try a Mini-G on his foamy Yak. It seemed to be doing a pretty good job holding. Might need some tinkering to get it just right, though.... I'm just wondering if having a mix on "throttle to ailerons" with enough throw to hold the model from torque rolling could be difficult because when I'm hovering, I sometimes move the ailerons from a little control to sometimes full throw for a bit. And then there would be the issue of remembering to switch in and out of the mix so the model would not go into a fast roll on application of lots of power. Still scratching my head on this one.... Bobby,
I'm not sure a Throttle to Aileron will work... specifically in forward flight. Unfortunately as Don stated, in hovering, the torque changes so much and so inconsistantly it might cause more issues than help. One thing to try would be just applying a little right aileron once you've entered the hover, to stay ahead of the model. You'll quickly get the hang of reading what the model is going to need aileron wise with your throttle inputs. Nick |

Bobby, how much throw do you have in the ailerons?
Like Nick said, you'll need to learn to add right aileron when bumping the throttle in hover. I too have found that foamys need extra aileron to prevent torque rolling. What you'll need to stop it is enough aileron to essentially torque roll to the right. It takes time and practice, but you can get the handle on it. |

Hi Nick,
I was all ready to try the Mini-G on my Slick but when I went to hook it up I realized that the two aileron servos were on separate channels. The aileron channel is mixed to drive Aux2 and I couldn't get both servos to work with the Mini-G. I'll need to pick up a "Y" harness when I'm down for Christmas, then there won't be an issue using the Mini-G. Can't wait to try it! Don C

We're doing well here and thanks for asking. We're planning on coming down just before Christmas and spend some time through New Year's. Are you planning to be in town? Today, I decided to make up my own Y-Harness and I'm now building a mount for the Mini-G. Hoping to give it a test this weekend.... Merry Christmas! Don C

any new news on the gyro install. I'd love to see how it helps. I am looking at getting my first plank, and the whole gyros on the surfaces thing sounds pretty cool. aklso looks like it will help the learning curve.

Mini-G is working great on the Slick!
It helps in slowing down the plane's responses, correcting for quick flight attitude changes and makes for a little gentler flying. Working now on switching back and forth between gentle flying and max performance stunts. Don C

Hi Nick,
No ETA on getting back just yet, but I'm pretty anxious to get back and I'll let you know. I can't wait for some more great flying weather like today. Been kinda gloomy weather here lately but nothing like those poor guys up north. Hope to see you soon! Don C |
